Nelson Mandela's Prison Walls

  • Nelson Mandela fought against Apartheid most of his life.  For his fighting, he spent many years of his life behind prison walls.
  • Apartheid is the separation of black and white people.  Even though the Black people outnumbered the white in South Africa this Apartheid gave total control over the black population.
  • Nelson Mandela spent most of his prison years at a labor camp ( a prison in which the prisoners are forced to work at jobs that they do not choose to do).  He later spent some time at another camp that was not a labor camp.
  • He was sentenced to jail in 1962.  At first his was only to be in prison for five years, but in 1964 the courts sentenced him to life in prison.  But with the end to Apartheid, he was freed in 1990.
  • Nelson Mandela and the people that supported him and his fight, are what brought an end to Apartheid in South Africa.
  • We are 7833 miles away from his prison walls.
